Approximately a quarter of our pupils come from outside the British Isles or from ethnic minority groups within this country. We value this diversity within our academy and the richness that these cultures bring to our community. At West Row Academy we promote the fundamental values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Where possible aspects of these are included in the curriculum, for example in the teaching of history and through the choice of texts in Literacy. These values are also promoted and reinforced in the following ways:

  • Elections for class and school councils
  • Meetings and decision making of school council
  • Classes setting their own rules
  • Election of Head Girl and Head Boy including election campaigns
  • ‘Destination Democracy’ theatre event
  • History lessons

Rule of Law

  • Setting of class and school rules
  • Consequences of behaviour choices
  • Teaching of values and reasons behind rules and laws

  • Values assemblies

  • Opportunities to make choices and learn from mistakes
  • Personal rights as seen in Behaviour Policy
  • Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
  • E-safety training
  • Encouragement to challenge themselves in learning

Mutual Respect

Whilst upholding the right of free speech we will challenge pupils, staff and parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British values including extremist views.
