West Row Academy

Phonics

Here at West Row Academy, we strive to motivate all children to develop a lifelong love of reading.

We aim to transform our children into confident, enthusiastic and reflective readers with a firm understanding of what it is to be a reader with high aspirations.

It is important to have well established communication links with our parents so that they feel connected to our schools’ ambitions. With this lifelong love of reading established within our pupils through our school and home reading programmes, we hope that we will empower our children and ready them for their futures.

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read and write. It is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate sounds and understand the link between the sound (phoneme) and the way it is written (grapheme). West Row Academy uses the Little Wandle phonics program.

Children throughout Reception and Key Stage 1 take part in a daily phonics session. These focus on developing reading primarily, speaking and listening and some elements of writing. The sessions are multi-sensory, fast-paced and active in order to ensure engagement for all the children.

Below is our Phonics Policy and information about how we teach phonics at West Row.
